lulu

my youngest comes home from school and announces that her homework is to draw a picture of what she will look like in twenty years. but since her genius teacher sends home the entire months' homework assignments, i already know that the assigment is to write about what she thinks her life will be like in twenty years. how old she will be, what she thinks she may be doing, etc...

she says she has no idea how old she will be in twenty years.

i ask her how old she is now and then watch the lightbulb light up.

then she says she has no idea what she will be doing.

so, i say things like: well, will you be living on a beach in california and living the life of a groovy surfer girl? or, will you be living in some cool loft in new york with your name in lights on broadway? will you be a backup singer for john mellencamp? not that these were any sort of childhood dreams of mine or anything. ok. maybe that backup singer one wasn't so much a childhood dream but a more recent one.

but i digress.

she runs for paper and pencil and i can't wait to see what she comes up with. will i finally get to live out one of my dreams through my kids?

I think I will have a great life when I am 27. It will be a bit hard with the children but I could handel it. and I want to be a soccer coach while my husband takes the kids.

huh? that's what you want to do? what about being an archaeologist? a ski bum? where's the part about how you'll backpack all over europe and asia, meet the dalai lama and become enlightened? won't you be busy at book signings for writing that bestselling family saga that turns into a lifetime movie?

sheesh. at least she's got the "while my husband takes the kids" part right.

I am always amazed at how kids come out with things that I just assume they don't notice or listen to. Like the "take the kids" thing. I say that all the time myself. John Cougar - big fan before he got so famous and married whatshername....I need a lover...

Oh, she's adorable!

You know, I don't know what I would have written at 7! At 9, I told my mom that when I grew up, I wanted to have an apartment, a piano and a dog. From probably 11 to 13 I wanted to be a geologist, or maybe an archeologist. But at 7? I might have said teacher (I loved school) or principal (my granddad was a principal) or editor (my dad ran a weekly newspaper at the time) but truly? I don't think I'd given it much thought yet!

Haha, I was just totally singing "Hurts So Good" in my car the other day.

Don't worry, like her mother all her hopes and dreams will expand. She'll have a million more as the years go by.
